Rich's Losing Earth: Missing Women

As a young researcher at Harvard’s climate change history project convened at the JFK School in the summer of 1989, many of the scientists and advocates in Nathaniel Rich’s article, “Losing Earth,” were familiar to me. At that time, the efforts of James Hansen, Gordon MacDonald, and Rafe Pomerance stood out, but I know that among the important actors were a number of women, none of whom received the least mention in this article. Jessica Tuchman Matthews was a senior staff member at the climate program at the World Resources Institute and worked with Pomerance. NOAA’s Susan Solomon and EPA’s Eileen Claussen, who had leadership roles in their respective fields already by the mid-1980s, were also more deserving of attention than several of the less experienced men that Rich quoted in his story.
